Police in Virginia have apprehended a 19-year-old in relation to a mass shooting at Virginia State University. Authorities identified the suspect as Camron Harris from Henrico, Virginia. Harris is not enrolled as a student at the university.
The shooting occurred on Saturday and resulted in five individuals being injured. Among them, one victim remains in critical condition. While police have not disclosed the names of the victims, it is known that only one is a university student.
Following the incident, an extensive search took place on campus. Law enforcement eventually discovered Harris hiding in a dormitory closet.
Police have charged Harris with four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of firearm use in a felony. He is currently in custody at Chesterfield County Jail without bail and may face additional charges.
The shooting unfolded early on a Saturday morning, with Harris being arrested later the same day. Officers reported to the scene on the 3300 block of Boisseau Street around 1:28 a.m., finding five victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside residence halls.
Virginia State University has addressed community concerns by stating they will enhance campus police presence. The statement urged students to check their emails for information on safety measures and support services.
The lockdown imposed on the VSU campus has since been lifted. Virginia State University, located approximately 25 miles south of Richmond in Ettrick, Virginia, is a historically Black state-supported institution.
