Couple Learns Costly Lesson on Venice Streets

A pair from the U.S., Julia Latoff and her boyfriend, Mike, found themselves in an unexpected situation during their vacation in Venice, Italy. They were celebrating Mike’s grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary with a trip to Italy and Austria. The couple enjoyed running and decided to take a jog through Venice.

Julia shared with Newsweek that they often run in cities they visit, both having taken up running after college. She emphasized the individual challenge of the sport and the supportive community it fosters.

Their jog in Venice took a turn when Mike, running without a shirt due to the hot July weather, began to attract negative attention. In New York City, where they reside, running shirtless in summer is common. They had also observed similar practices in Florence. However, as they ran through Venice, Julia noticed locals reacting with disapproval.

The tension escalated when someone shouted at them. Julia and Mike then checked their phones and discovered that Venice has rules against walking shirtless in the historic center. Such attire is considered disrespectful near the city’s cultural and religious landmarks. Violators may be fined up to €250 ($290), a regulation enforced by the Venice City Council to maintain public decorum.

Upon realizing their mistake, the couple quickly found an alley to buy a shirt. Julia admitted they felt embarrassed yet recognized it was an honest error. Venice imposes several rules to safeguard its historic environment. Beyond the fines for bare-chested walkers, penalties range from €25 to €500 for various infractions. These include eating or sitting in restricted areas, swimming in canals, littering, feeding birds, and using bicycles in the historic center.

Julia shared the experience on Instagram, advising future Venice visitors to pack running shirts. She noted the lesson they learned, stating Mike remains cautious about where he chooses to run shirtless in the future.
