Byron Donalds Secures Nomination

Byron Donalds claimed the Republican nomination in Florida’s gubernatorial race. He will face Democratic former Representative David Jolly in November’s midterm elections. If victorious, Erika Donalds, his wife, will become Florida’s first lady.

Primary Election Results

Donalds triumphed over several candidates in the primary, capturing 47.8% of the vote with 99% reporting, as per the Associated Press. Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins garnered 25.2%, and investor James Fishback received 10.5%.

Background of Byron Donalds

Since 2021, Donalds has represented Florida’s 19th District, which includes Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Naples. Known for his strong support of President Donald Trump, Donalds received Trump’s endorsement. Before Congress, he served in the Florida House of Representatives.

Donalds graduated from Florida State University and worked in banking and finance in Southwest Florida. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

Democratic Rival: David Jolly

Donalds’ opponent, Jolly, served in the U.S. House from 2014 to 2017 representing a Pinellas County district. Originally a Republican, Jolly turned independent in 2018 and later joined the Democratic Party due to dissatisfaction with the GOP during Trump’s presidency.

Meet Erika Donalds

Erika Donalds is active in conservative political circles. She chairs education opportunity at the America First Policy Institute and advocates for school choice. The couple married on March 15, 2003. She earned her degrees from Florida State University and Florida Atlantic University.

In 2017, she founded the Optima Foundation to enhance classical education through public charter schools in Florida, now known as the Education Freedom Foundation. Previously, she served as CFO and partner at Dalton, Greiner, Hartman, Maher & Co., LLC.

“I’m so proud of you,” she expressed in an Instagram post to her husband, calling him a humble and principled leader.

The couple met in college. After graduating, Byron moved to Naples, where Erika worked as an accountant. In a short span, they graduated, married, and had their first son.

Views on Education

Erika shared her education policy views in July at the American Legislative Exchange Council. She recounted becoming engaged in activism after removing her son from an unsuitable school, discovering the importance of school choice.

“I finally found a school, and at the time we had to put it on our credit card. But I said I would rather go in debt than have my son hate learning every day,” she stated.

Byron Donalds’ Family

The couple has three sons: Damon, Darin, and Mason, as mentioned in Byron Donalds’ official biography.

Chances in the Governor’s Race

Recent surveys generally show Donalds leading, although a Democratic internal poll gives Jolly a slight edge. The Hart Research Associates poll shows Jolly at 46% and Donalds at 45%. It surveyed 600 voters with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Another poll from the James Madison Institute gives Donalds a 7-point lead, while a University of North Florida survey shows him leading by 5 points. Prediction markets rate Donalds highly, with an 83% likelihood of winning.

These markets allow traders to speculate on political outcomes, using real-money contracts to create probability estimates. They reflect immediate trader sentiment but do not always predict outcomes accurately.

The Cook Political Report rates the race as Solid Republican. Sabato’s Crystal Ball labels it Likely Republican. Fluctuations in polling prompted a shift from Safe to Likely Republican in recent updates.

Florida’s Political Landscape

Florida has shifted from a battleground to a more challenging terrain for Democrats. Trump widened his margin there over successive elections. Republicans also expanded their voter registration lead, with 5,607,836 registered Republicans as compared to 4,066,503 Democrats.

The GOP increased its influence with Latino voters, swaying traditionally Democratic regions. Population growth from conservative states during the COVID-19 pandemic further bolstered Republican gains, culminating in Governor Ron DeSantis’ substantial reelection victory in 2022.

Republican policy changes in education, voting, immigration, and social issues have appealed to voters relocating from progressive states, reinforcing the GOP’s position in Florida.
