President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest point during his second term, matching his previous lowest rating as a commander in chief, according to a new poll. The Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that only 33% of respondents approve of Trump’s performance, a drop from 35% the previous week. The survey involved 1,166 participants, with 64% expressing disapproval.
The former president’s approval previously dipped to 33% in December 2017 during his first term. Trump’s public remarks at the David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence highlight ongoing support for law enforcement even as his approval declines.
“As economic pain deepens, disapproval of Trump hits a new high,” states a Fox News poll summary.
Amid the ongoing war in Iran, initiated to eliminate the country’s nuclear weapons program, the poll indicates that 80% of respondents foresee a prolonged conflict. Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil shipments, have escalated tensions. Approximately 20% of the world’s oil transits this strait, impacting fuel costs worldwide.
The national average for gas prices has surged from under $3 to over $4 per gallon since the conflict began, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). At a New York rally promoting lower crime rates, Trump defended the increased gas prices, stating the price hike was a necessary consequence of doing “the right thing.” Inflation has also risen, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting a year-over-year increase of 3.4% in inflation since February.
A White House spokesperson affirmed that Trump has enacted substantial middle-class tax cuts, reduced medicine costs, strengthened border security, and lowered violent crime rates. These efforts are presented as part of Trump’s agenda to address economic challenges and bolster national strength.
The U.S.-Iran agreement lowering concerns over global oil supply has caused gas prices to start declining, but analysts caution the relief might be short-lived due to refinery constraints and supply disruptions.
The Democratic Party aims to leverage the unpopular war and financial concerns to regain control of Congress in the upcoming November elections. Current polling data reveals only 35% support for Trump’s actions in Iran.
