A town hall in Dearborn, Michigan, turned into a heated debate about the influence of Muslim culture in the city on Tuesday. Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church accused the city of operating under Sharia law, claiming, “America, we have lost this city. This is a city that is no longer up under American laws; we are up under Sharia law. We will not have it anymore.”
The pastor’s comments came amid a backdrop of anti-Islam protests, reflecting concerns that Muslim inhabitants in Michigan might align their communities with their religious principles, which Sewell believes conflict with mainstream U.S. values.
Statements and Reactions to Sharia Law Claims
Sewell’s reference to Sharia law does not involve any real legislation enforcing Muslim religious practices, but rather a perception of favoritism toward Muslims in religious freedom cases. Sewell pointed out an incident involving Muslim counterprotesters who, he felt, faced inadequate repercussions for allegedly assaulting Jake Lang, a local political activist.
Lang is known for his confrontations with Dearborn’s Muslim community. He describes himself as a defender of American culture. His online presence includes videos where he is seen in military attire conducting baptisms and expressing views on immigration.
Lang’s online rhetoric became a physical altercation when he took his protest to Dearborn’s Arbaeen March, commemorating a significant religious event. Videos showed him being attacked, and one arrest was made concerning the incident. Lang and Sewell both argue this response does not suffice.
City Response and Demographics
Dearborn city officials reject the portrayal that the city is disproportionately influenced by Muslims. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud remarked at a city council meeting, “They aren’t simply attacking our Muslim and Arab communities. They’re also trying to erase our Christian brothers and sisters who have contributed immeasurably to the city and folks of other faiths.” Hammoud emphasized the diverse composition of the city.
According to the 2020 U.S. census, Dearborn is the first American city with a predominantly Arab population, with around 54.5% of residents of Middle Eastern or North African descent.
