Enes Kanter Freedom Removed from WNBA Game After Confrontation with Natasha Cloud

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, experienced a tense encounter with Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud during a WNBA game against the Indiana Fever. The incident took place at Wintrust Arena on Sunday night. Freedom claimed the situation began when he celebrated a 3-pointer by Sophie Cunningham, a Fever guard.

Freedom described how Cloud allegedly approached him in a confrontational manner after his celebration. She accused him of inappropriate intentions, which Freedom denied, clarifying that he was there to support women.

“I’m not trying to sleep with her,” Freedom insisted. “I’m just here to protect women and support her.”

The confrontation escalated with Cloud reportedly using profanities, which Freedom found shocking considering the presence of young fans.

Freedom mentioned that his attire might have contributed to the confrontation. He wore a black shirt with the definition of “woman” printed on it, which he speculated could have triggered Cloud.

Despite the argument, Cloud later reiterated her support for the transgender community in a social media post, declaring her protective stance toward trans individuals.

Following the incident, security escorted Freedom out of the arena. He expressed confusion over the lack of a clear explanation for his removal, highlighting his peaceful intentions and saying his manager had informed the Chicago Sky prior to his attendance.

The dispute coincided with Freedom’s announcement of entering the 2027 WNBA Draft. He intends to challenge the WNBA’s eligibility rules regarding transgender athletes. The WNBA, in a previous statement, denounced efforts they considered demeaning or marginalizing, though Freedom argued against perceived anti-trans or anti-LGBTQ intentions.

Freedom emphasized his commitment to joining the league and expressed determination to face Cloud on the court. He remarked on his readiness to adhere to the existing rules, emphasizing that his actions align with the regulations set by the league.

Freedom also shared his interest in playing for the Indiana Fever alongside Caitlin Clark. His motivation stemmed from a viral clip of Golden State Valkyries player Gabby Williams showing support for transgender players in the WNBA.

Since his draft announcement, Freedom has faced both support and backlash. While other former basketball players expressed interest in pursuing similar paths, Freedom reported receiving death threats amidst the controversy. He reiterated his objective of supporting women’s sports and showed willingness to engage in dialogue with WNBA leadership.
