Brandon Clarke, a former NBA player with the Memphis Grizzlies, tragically died due to a drug overdose. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed the news on Friday, revealing the cause as an accidental overdose stemming from heroin and cocaine. The unfortunate event occurred on May 11 at his residence in Los Angeles, where authorities discovered drug paraphernalia. Clarke was 29 years old.
Memorable NBA Career
Clarke was initially drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 but soon traded to the Grizzlies for Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick. Known for his significant impact, Clarke earned the MVP title in the 2019 NBA Summer League, making history as the second non-American to receive the honor. Over seven years, Clarke contributed mainly as a bench player for the Grizzlies.
Challenges in His Last Season
The past year proved challenging for Clarke. His playtime was limited to just two games due to a right knee surgery followed by a right calf strain. Despite Memphis’ announcement in March about his ongoing rehabilitation, tests indicated the need for more recovery time, postponing his return to the next season.
Legal Issues
In April, Clarke encountered legal troubles in Arkansas, facing charges such as improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, and trafficking. He was scheduled to appear in court on May 15.
Early Basketball Success
Clarke’s basketball journey commenced with notable success at Gonzaga, which led to his impact on the Grizzlies. In his debut season, he averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, earning a spot on the 2019-20 All-Rookie team. Over his career, Clarke averaged 20.8 minutes per game, achieving 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over 309 NBA games.
