Ian Machado Garry’s name surfaced during media interactions with UFC CEO Dana White at the recent UFC Fight Night despite his absence from the event. This discussion was a follow-up to White’s criticism following Machado Garry’s defeat to Islam Makhachev at UFC 330, an event that put Makhachev’s Welterweight Championship title on the line.
The main critique focused on Machado Garry’s approach, with White, Makhachev, and others suggesting that Machado Garry was overly courteous to opponents instead of intensifying aggression to secure a win. White maintained his stance on these remarks, even as he corrected a reporter’s interpretation during the Fight Night. The reporter claimed that White expressed a desire for Machado Garry to “annihilate Makhachev in the fifth round,” which White clarified by saying, “I didn’t say I’d like for him to do that.” He expanded, “You work your whole life to get this opportunity.”
White acknowledged Machado Garry’s performance leading up to the fifth round, attributing it to the assumed game plan. However, White expressed disappointment in Machado Garry’s amicable demeanor when he could have been more aggressive. “Tell him how great he is when they’re putting the belt on you. Ian might not have that opportunity again,” White remarked.
Makhachev retained the UFC Welterweight Championship with a unanimous decision victory, concurring with White’s analysis of Machado Garry after UFC 330. Despite the criticism, Machado Garry is recognized as a talented MMA fighter with an impressive record—17 wins in 19 fights, with losses to Makhachev and one other opponent. The current UFC rankings place Machado Garry as the number two overall welterweight fighter, trailing only Carlos Prates.
While White did not exclude Machado Garry from future title shot opportunities, he emphasized the missed opportunity to defeat an opponent like Makhachev. Interestingly, Machado Garry had defeated Prates in a unanimous decision at a UFC event in April 2025. This victory may position Machado Garry for another possible title match with Makhachev in the future.
