Keith Lee Partners with Salvation Army for Relief Effort in Indiana

On Monday, food influencer and philanthropist Keith Lee collaborated with the Salvation Army and the city of Gary for a major relief initiative in northwest Indiana. The area suffered from a power outage lasting two weeks after severe weather, featuring winds reaching 100 mph, struck on August 11. The storms left substantial damage, including uprooted sidewalks and debris throughout Gary.

Lee, originally from Detroit and now in Texas, became famous for his straightforward food reviews. He announced the partnership in a social media post, explaining his reassessment of priorities after learning about the devastating impact on Gary, a historically underprivileged community.

The second this happened, everything changed — I had a conversation with my wife, I called my sister, and we completely switched course. Lee shared while distributing kits with volunteers.

His strong social media presence, with 17 million TikTok followers and millions more on Instagram, was evident as residents expressed excitement seeing him on-site. Lee’s food tours often boost local businesses as his reviews bring increased attention and customers.

During the relief event, 2,000 kits were distributed, including cleaning supplies like mops, brooms, gloves, and N95 masks. Volunteers also supplied 1,000 sandwiches, chips, and drinks. Keith Lee contributed $15,000 to aid efforts, with NBA player Tyrese Haliburton matching this donation.

Gary’s Roosevelt High School parking lot hosted the relief and community event. Among the activities were food trucks, a live DJ, and numerous booths offering free meals. Sylvia Martin, the director of planning and zoning for Gary, emphasized the rapid organization. She noted the community’s strength in coming together.

We have a mayor that’s very transformative and he puts that energy out there, and we get it back tenfold. Martin stated.

Local vendors like Marshawna Kendrick provided food, including offerings from her pop-up, Pineapple Paradise. Despite short notice, Kendrick embraced the chance to help.

Though power restoration is ongoing, with over 7,000 buildings still affected by Monday afternoon, some residents highlighted disparities in how quickly power was restored in different neighborhoods. Christine Jones, a resident, pointed to these challenges faced by predominantly Black communities.

Local power supplier NIPSCO indicated power would be substantially restored by Tuesday. Necessary repairs involved hundreds of poles. Longtime resident Christine Jones noted the struggles of surviving without power, recounting difficulties in accessing essentials when local stores were closed.

The relief initiative’s impact was felt by many, providing both essential support and a sense of community spirit. Organizer Martin mentioned the continuous efforts to provide shelter and resources to affected residents. Dora Rogers, a local, appreciated Lee’s role in highlighting Gary and hopes for improvements soon.
