The 3rd Marine Division announced the death of Lance Cpl. Devin J. Hernandez, a resident of Maryland, on November 5. The 25-year-old Marine lost his life on November 3 during a fast-rope training exercise at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan.
Authorities have yet to disclose the specific details leading up to the incident. Fast-roping, a method utilized by troops to quickly deploy from a helicopter by descending via a rope, allows for rapid area entry without the need for aircraft landing.
The division’s commander, Maj. Gen. Kyle Ellison, stated, “The Marines and Sailors of 3rd Marine Division mourn the loss of one of our own. We extend our deepest condolences to Lance Cpl. Hernandez’s family, friends, and fellow Marines. Our focus remains on supporting them while we fully investigate the circumstances of this tragic incident.” The 3rd Marine Division did not immediately respond to the request for further comments.
Lance Cpl. Hernandez served as a combat engineer with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Among his military achievements was the receipt of the Navy Arctic Service Record.
Further details regarding the circumstances and location of Hernandez’s passing remain undisclosed. The cause of death has not been revealed by the officials at this time.
