High School Athlete Raises Safety Concerns

Ella Frei, a high school athlete in Wisconsin, has publicly challenged her school’s policy regarding transgender students’ use of locker rooms. Frei shared her experience of discomfort, asserting that she felt unsafe being in private spaces shared with a male student in 2022. Despite approaching the school board with her concerns, her complaints were overlooked. This led Frei to voice her worries publicly alongside women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines.

Norfolk Police Officer Files Lawsuit

In another case, a former police officer from Norfolk, Virginia, Meghan Grabow, filed a lawsuit against the city and its police chief. The legal complaint, dated August 2024, arose from an incident where Grabow was changing in the women’s locker room when a recruit, identified as a biological male who identifies as a woman, entered the room. Grabow reported feeling uncomfortable with the recruit’s gaze and spoke to her superiors, who dismissed her concerns.

Talbot, the police chief, reportedly reassured officers that the recruit would use facilities consistent with their gender identity and asked them to refer to the recruit as ‘she.’ Other officers expressed concerns about the lack of prior notice regarding the policy. Grabow faced retaliation, receiving an indefinite suspension over an earlier traffic violation after voicing her concerns.

Seeking Compensation

Grabow is pursuing compensation of $15 million, citing emotional distress and violations of her religious freedoms. Her attorney, Scott Lloyd, emphasized the importance of defending female-only spaces. He commended Grabow for her courage in addressing the issue.

The Norfolk Police Department has refrained from commenting on the pending litigation.

Department Guidelines

Norfolk Police Department’s guidelines from 2020 advise employees to respect individuals’ gender identity and expression. These guidelines discourage questioning a transgender person’s identity without specific and articulable reasons. Expressions may encompass various traits not typically associated with a person’s sex at birth.
