Stagg’s Katy Zumerchik Triumphs Over Challenges to Lead Her Team

Freshman year posed significant challenges for Stagg’s Katy Zumerchik. Immediately placed on the varsity team, she transitioned from middle hitter to the outside. This move tested her adaptability.

Adding to the physical demands, Zumerchik experienced a growth spurt that strained her knees, resulting in Osgood-Schlatter syndrome. Despite this, she remained determined. I had Osgood-Schlatter syndrome, she explained. I wasn’t able to play to my full potential. But I worked through it.

Zumerchik, now a 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter, showed her progression in a recent nonconference victory over Tinley Park. She recorded 13 kills and achieved two aces, leading to a 25-12, 25-15 win.

Teammate Nicole Maka, adjusting from outside to middle due to an injury, contributed four kills. Hannah Svoboda added 13 assists for Stagg, now marking a 2-0 start despite Amelia Kadamus’s absence due to an ankle injury. We’re hoping Amelia can be back in a few days, shared coach Erin Moran, as the team prepares for the Chicago Christian Invitational.

For Tinley Park, Sarah Aggen led with five kills, while Grace Samborski managed two aces.

Zumerchik’s athletic journey began early at Palos South Middle School. I tried out for everything, she shared, listing a range of sports and activities. Ultimately, volleyball captured her focus and passion.

Her efforts yielded impressive results. Zumerchik has tallied 23 kills early in the season. Whenever the ball goes to her, I know we’re going to get the point, teammate Maka praised.

Moran, now in her first year coaching at Stagg and a former player herself, commends the team’s chemistry. This team has excellent chemistry, Moran remarked, noting the strong connections among players.

Zumerchik looks to the future with optimism. My mindset is that I want to win and do well, she said. Her ambition includes ensuring that her teammates gain opportunities to contribute actively.
