In Washington, a federal grand jury has indicted Melissa Farris, a woman from Kentucky, for allegedly damaging The World War II Memorial on the National Mall. She faces two felony charges for destroying the veterans’ memorial and government property.
Farris, from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, is accused of spray-painting “Clean hands dirty $” on the monument and filling a fountain with bubbles on August 13. Her arraignment is scheduled for next week. After her initial court appearance on August 17, she was released.
President Donald Trump commented on the vandalism through social media. He linked this incident with what he claimed to be ongoing vandalism at the nearby Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, though he provided no evidence.
In a related case, a former Olympian was charged in July with damaging the Reflecting Pool. However, the Justice Department later dropped the case, stating new evidence contradicted the involvement of vandals.
