Catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border has resulted in the deaths of hundreds and left thousands missing. Rescuers in Nepal are urgently working to free workers believed to be trapped in hydropower site tunnels, which have been buried under mud. The crucial 72-hour window is essential for survival, particularly in terms of accessing clean water.
Disaster epidemiologist Jennifer Horney from the University of Delaware noted the importance of emergency protocols in such scenarios. If the tunnels had planned for emergencies, workers might have been trained on exit locations. However, the intensity of the flooding may have compromised these exits, complicating rescue efforts.
For those trapped, the availability of clean drinking water is vital. The presence of emergency water supplies in the tunnels remains uncertain. Horney emphasized, “There just wouldn’t be a way to go much beyond three days without safe, drinkable water.”
An aerial view reveals significant destruction near the Trishuli River, where buildings and vehicles are covered in mud following the floods and mudslides in the Rasuwa district. Access to breathable air remains another challenge. Geoscientist Jakob Steiner from the University of Graz indicated that although some oxygen might have reached those trapped, the pressure to deliver food and water grows as time passes.
The mental toll of isolation is another factor to consider. Effective rescue operations may depend on the ability to deliver supplies safely. Thomas Chandler from Columbia University referenced a similar incident in 2023, where workers survived 17 days trapped in a Himalayan tunnel, aided by food, water, and oxygen delivered through pipes.
Climate conditions inside the tunnels, such as high heat and humidity, can expedite dehydration. Rescued individuals may require significant care to address both physical and mental stress. Dedicated efforts continue in the region, underscoring the challenges of managing such disasters.
