Sanders Criticizes Democratic Resistance to El-Sayed Amid Controversy

Senator Bernie Sanders, representing Vermont, has expressed concern over a small group of Democratic leaders and donors who seem hesitant about Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s chances. Sanders told ‘Politico Playbook’ that progressives, such as El-Sayed, challenge wealthy interests and the party’s stance on Israel. This comes as El-Sayed faces scrutiny over his connections with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker.

Sanders stated, “You’re talking about a small number of people who are at the head of the Democratic Party. You’re talking about the donor class. Are they less than enthusiastic about Abdul? Yes, they are.” His comments highlight resistance within the party’s top ranks.

Progressives threaten wealthy interests and party stance on Israel, said Sanders.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently endorsed moderate Haley Stevens in an upcoming Senate primary. El-Sayed has since tried to consolidate Democrats after narrowly defeating Stevens. Democratic strategist Yemisi Egbewole emphasizes winning Senate control, saying, “Dems want a majority in the Senate. El-Sayed apologized for his comments about the Temple Israel attack and hasn’t campaigned with Hasan. It’s now his job to win those voters.”

RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre countered Sanders’ defense, claiming El-Sayed’s associations make him unfit for the Senate. She argued, “Abdul El-Sayed is a terrorist bootlicker who downplayed 9/11, pals around with a radical streamer, and whose mother worked for an organization that funneled money to Osama bin Laden.”

Sanders attributed the resistance to El-Sayed to a small group within the Democratic leadership and major donors. He described candidates like El-Sayed as threats to the oligarchy and U.S. foreign policy.

The controversy around El-Sayed escalated due to renewed questions about his association with Piker, who has received criticism for remarks about American Jews and Israel. Prominent figures, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senators Cory Booker and Elissa Slotkin, have condemned Piker’s statements.

Sanders minimized the relevance of Piker’s statements, emphasizing the importance of focusing on economic issues. “Like every other podcaster in the world, he says dumb things that people should reject,” Sanders argued.

El-Sayed, at the Michigan Democratic Party convention, emphasized his campaign focus on state issues, saying, “This is about affordability in Michigan. Seeing a doctor in Michigan. Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in Michigan.” He aims to move past the controversies and concentrate on local concerns.

Polls reveal a competitive race, with Republican nominee Mike Rogers slightly leading El-Sayed. Sanders advises El-Sayed to prioritize issues impacting working families in Michigan to win the election.
