Excavation will commence in the next two weeks for a memorial arch in Washington, D.C., spearheaded by the Trump administration. This project currently faces legal challenges from opponents concerned about the disruption to historic sight lines in the area.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced construction on the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck will start on Columbia Island. It is positioned between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

This structure will honor the history of Arlington Cemetery and reflect the prominence of the nation’s capital,” Burgum stated on X, sharing images of the planned 250-foot arch.

Design and Opposition

Renderings reveal a white arch detailed with gold, inscribed with “ONE NATION UNDER GOD.” A figure resembling Lady Liberty, with wings and a torch, stands on top along with gold eagles.

Some opposition comes from three veterans and an architectural historian. They argue congressional approval is required but absent, as noted by attorney Nicolas Sansone from the Public Citizen Litigation Group.
