A winery, co-owned by the husband of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has faced shutdown due to allegations of fraud. This development was highlighted by the House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, R-Ky. Comer made it clear that the winery was implicated in selling barrels under the pretension of ‘wine to be aged,’ even though they were empty.
In a conversation with Trey Gowdy on Fox News’ ‘Sunday Night in America,’ Comer discussed discrepancies found in Omar’s financial disclosure form. He indicated that the winery was a major asset in her $25 million financial disclosure. Reports suggest that this winery had ceased operations because of fraudulent practices.
‘I can tell you from our initial investigation of Omar and her financial disclosure form that there are multiple fronts where you could get a search warrant issued,’ Comer stated.
The winery, spearheaded by Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, closed in April amid increasing congressional scrutiny regarding her finances.
This revelation aligns with a broader federal investigation concerning Omar’s citizenship in the U.S. Federal authorities exercised a search warrant at her Washington, D.C. residence earlier in the month, focusing on allegations about misrepresentation of her age during the citizenship process.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., has suggested deportation for Omar if allegations against her are substantiated. Critics accuse the investigation of being a politically driven attack, targeting Omar as an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
Previously, Omar was under scrutiny for potential financial discrepancies following an unexplained rapid increase in her net worth. Omar attributed these differences to an accounting mistake.
Comer focused on the winery in a letter sent in February, questioning the sudden change in its valuation in Omar’s financial disclosure forms. In 2023, the winery was reported to have a stake valued substantially higher than in previous years, raising public concerns.
Omar publicly declared together with Mynett, their combined wealth was under $100,000, despite the winery’s increased valuation. The winery, named eStCru, was established in 2020 in California and received recognition as one of the ‘Hot Brands of 2022’ by Wine Business.
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) also raided Omar’s home, probing deeper into financial dealings. The House Oversight Committee has redirected the matter to the House Ethics Committee to examine potential wrongdoing but the case has not yet been actively pursued.
