West Aurora’s Dynamic Duo Leads Team to Victory

Junior running back Michael Williams is emerging as an integral part of West Aurora’s ground game. His emergence comes at a crucial time for the team. Senior Bryce Riley remains the primary choice for coach Nate Eimer, but Williams is developing into a significant scoring threat.

Williams remarked confidently, The best running back duo in the state. He attributes much of his improvement to learning from Riley. Bryce has taught me a lot of things. We worked together the entire summer, he shared. Through training, Williams honed his skills and increased his understanding of the game.

Both Williams and Riley excelled in a recent game. They each surpassed 100 rushing yards, keying a 49-21 victory over Streamwood. Williams, despite limited early touches, showcased his talent with a 9-yard run followed by a 41-yard touchdown. These efforts helped West Aurora gain a 28-14 halftime advantage, extended by a lightning delay.

Coach Eimer emphasized the importance of their tandem. We’ve got a 1-2 punch, and you have to use it, he said. Eimer relied on their running game as Streamwood struggled to contain them. I’ve felt for the last couple weeks Williams has been close to breaking a couple, he acknowledged.

In the second half, Williams continued to excel, finishing with 144 yards and two additional touchdowns. Mike’s special, said Eimer, highlighting his ability to provide momentum. Riley, often the focus of opposing defenses, expressed pride in his teammate’s performance.

Riley, who recorded 232 all-purpose yards, took on the role of a senior leader. Michael is a young back with a lot to learn, but he’s underestimated because of his size, Riley observed. Despite his stature, Williams has a knack for breaking tackles and contributing in various roles.

Riley also played a pivotal role early in the game. His initial two carries resulted in touchdowns, covering 42 and 46 yards. An 88-yard kickoff return further demoralized Streamwood. Riley has totaled 459 rushing yards this season.

West Aurora’s planning included extra attention to kick returns. We had inside time this week due to the heat and focused on kick returns, Riley explained. Aware of Streamwood’s tendencies, he capitalized on a well-blocked return.

Williams maintains a big-picture perspective, undisturbed by size concerns. Varsity is an adjustment but not huge, he stated. Despite being among bigger, stronger, and faster opponents, Williams remains unfazed, embracing his role in the team’s success.
