Amy Gertner, wife of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, revealed to his campaign in 2025 that he had sent inappropriate messages to other women. This information emerged during an internal review at the start of his candidacy. The Wall Street Journal initially reported on Gertner’s disclosure. In a statement provided through Platner’s campaign, she mentioned that their marriage is now stronger after undergoing counseling.
In her statement, Gertner expressed confidence in Platner’s character, saying, “I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.” She also conveyed her disappointment over sharing “deeply personal details” with a campaign staffer, feeling betrayed by the leak.
Graham Platner, who spoke at a Fighting Oligarchy event in Portland, Maine, on May 25, 2026, is the leading Democratic candidate expected to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November midterm elections. His main opponent, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, exited the race in April. Platner has faced scrutiny over past problematic internet comments and a tattoo from his Marine Corps days, which bears a Nazi symbol. He has since covered the tattoo.
The outcome of the Maine Senate race is significant, potentially deciding which party will control the chamber after the elections. Platner enjoys support from progressive leaders like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. His campaign emphasizes a populist approach, highlighting his working-class roots.
In a CBS News interview, Platner attributed past controversial views to his experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder and a hyper-masculine military environment. He stated, “We have a crude sense of humor in the infantry. We certainly have a, I would say, narrow view of a lot of topics, and that colored my opinions and my beliefs.” Platner explained that over time, exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences reshaped his beliefs.
