Sanctuary Policies Criticized After New Jersey Highway Crash

Republican critics have argued that sanctuary policies are creating dangerous situations and hindering ICE’s operations following a recent incident in New Jersey. An illegal immigrant fled agents and crashed on a major New Jersey highway, injuring the wife of a Democratic mayor.

The crash has reignited debate over New Jersey’s restrictions on collaboration between local police and federal immigration authorities. Republicans claim these policies, particularly the ‘Trust Directive’ endorsed by state officials, pose public safety risks. They suggest Democrats should focus on bolstering enforcement rather than aiming to abolish ICE.

Assemblyman Paul Kanitra voiced his concern in an interview with Fox News Digital, noting that without sanctuary status, incidents like this might be prevented. He criticized Democrats for failing to acknowledge the adverse impacts of the ‘Trust Directive.’ Kanitra highlighted other lethal incidents connected to illegal immigrants driving without proper intervention.

The suspect in the recent crash evaded ICE officers, ran a stoplight on U.S. 130, and collided with a Tesla affecting the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. ICE spokesperson confirmed the series of events leading up to the accident and the necessity of their actions.

“After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien from their car,” said an ICE spokesperson.

Sen. Mike Testa emphasized the importance of 287(g) agreements for public safety, stressing that efforts to collaborate with ICE in counties like Cape May have been thwarted. He expressed concern over the continued trend of illegal behavior emboldened by current policies.

Testa pointed out a lack of response from Democratic leadership, but noted Sen. Brian Stack’s acknowledgment that existing laws need enforcement. Meanwhile, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman called for ICE’s abolition following the crash, suggesting a focus on federal immigration enforcement was misplaced.

Testa was particularly critical of this viewpoint, arguing for more robust action against criminals. He reiterated that citizenship should come with privileges and expressed disappointment in policies that complicate the arrest and removal of illegal immigrants.

The debate highlights a broader conflict over immigration policies and enforcement in the state and the nation. Both Watson Coleman and Sherrill were reached for comments on the issue. The incident has brought renewed attention to the contentious role of ICE and sanctuary policies.
