Trump’s Demand During Trade Conflict

On Monday, President Donald Trump insisted that Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier cease selling its planes in the United States unless they start production on American soil. “No More Selling Bombardier in the United States! Their products aren’t good enough!” Trump exclaimed on Truth Social. He claims that over 50% of Bombardier’s revenue originates from the U.S., while Canadian restrictions prevent firms like Gulfstream Aerospace from operating there. Newsweek approached the White House for comments, but was directed to Trump’s post instead. Bombardier did not respond to Newsweek’s email request for comment before publication.

The demand emerged a day before Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs are set to apply amidst ongoing trade tensions. On Tuesday, Canada’s counter-tariffs will affect more than 700 U.S. products, matching tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian goods such as hockey sticks and medical equipment dollar for dollar.

Bombardier’s Notable Clientele

Bombardier’s planes enjoy popularity among numerous celebrities. For years, Oprah Winfrey has traveled on a Bombardier Global Express XRS. Jay-Z owns a Bombardier Global 7500, with a Challenger 850 gifted by Beyoncé accompanying it. Earlier Threats

Trump echoes an almost identical threat first made in January without effectuation. At that instance, he proclaimed the decertification of Bombardier Global Express business jets and proposed 50% tariffs on all Canadian-made aircraft unless Canadian authorities certify Gulfstream models. “We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified,” he stated on January 29. Neither the decertification nor the tariff came into force, as Canada certified several Gulfstream models, including the G500, G600, G700, and G800, prompting the issue to temporarily quiet until resurfacing Monday.

The altercation expands beyond tariffs, embroiling an ongoing dispute with Prime Minister Mark Carney that covers numerous tariffed items, a failed trade agreement, the renaming of landmarks, and Trump’s persistent remarks about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state.

Economic Implications for Bombardier

Bombardier operates more than 5,100 aircraft within the U.S., hosting a defense sector in Wichita, Kansas, for aircraft modifications geared toward military and specialized missions. The company also engages with corporate entities, charter services, and fractional-ownership enterprises.

Privately owned jets incur high costs, including maintenance, crew, and insurance expenses, spurring demand for shared ownership models. Wealth intelligence indicates that corporate executives make up the majority of private jet owners among those with net worth over $30 million.

Bombardier, competing with Gulfstream, Dassault, and Embraer, confronts risks to U.S. operations following Trump’s decrees. It employs over 18,800 personnel globally, including 3,100 in the U.S., at key facilities supporting American suppliers.

Bombardier acknowledged Trump’s remarks in January, expressing anticipation for resolution to avoid disrupting air transport. This concern has financial gravity. Analysts project Bombardier’s 2026 revenue close to $10.2 billion, with potential risk to approximately $5 billion. Revenue for Q2 rose 6% year-over-year, with 32 deliveries totaling $2.2 billion, and services marked a record at $674 million.

After Trump’s post, Bombardier shares decreased between 5% and 9% within hours.

Ongoing Trade Dispute Explained

Negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed on August 21 after three days of discussions. Trump had prolonged the start of new tariffs providing more time for agreement. Canada halted talks on account of deepened U.S. demands deemed unacceptable by Carney.

The Trump administration applied 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods immediately afterward. Both governments offer contradictory narratives of events at the negotiating table. Carney alleged Washington sought excessive concessions beyond mutual tariff relief plans.

Conversely, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated Washington proposed tariff alleviation but faced rejection by Canada, leading to additional U.S. tariffs.

Trade damage concentrates in several border states also politically critical: Maine, Michigan, Ohio, Alaska, and Iowa. Maine’s Senator Susan Collins, seeking reelection, has labeled the tariffs a “mistake.” In contrast, Michigan’s Representative Lisa McClain endorsed them, anticipating trading equity.
