Rams Fall to 49ers in Season Opener

The Los Angeles Rams entered the season with high expectations as Super Bowl favorites, yet their performance against the San Francisco 49ers suggested otherwise. The Rams suffered a 27-7 defeat in an NFL International Series game held in Melbourne, Australia.

This match marked the debut of significant new additions to the Rams’ defense, including Myles Garrett, the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Unfortunately, Garrett’s contributions were limited by an ongoing injury that disrupted his offseason preparations. His appearances on the field were sporadic, and his presence went largely unnoticed in terms of impact.

While Garrett struggled, new Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie made four tackles and defended two passes. Meanwhile, Rams safety Quentin Lake stood out with 10 total tackles, seven of those solo, and recorded an interception.

This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there, and I’ve got to be better,” Garrett confessed following the game.

Despite playing around 40 snaps, Garrett failed to make a statistical impact, a surprising outcome for a player of his caliber. He had not recorded zero quarterback pressures in a game since 2018. In contrast, San Francisco’s quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 205 yards, completing 25 of 34 passes, with three touchdowns, albeit with one interception.

Garrett revealed that he was not entirely fit due to knee swelling. This ongoing issue previously described by Rams head coach Sean McVay as knee swelling, kept Garrett from participating in training camp. Garrett admitted that he prioritized staying healthy over his performance against the 49ers, which he felt was evident.

The Rams’ defense also missed Aaron Donald, another key player, who was absent from the game in Australia. Donald has been preparing for a return to professional football after retiring in March 2024.

The Rams aim to rebound from this disappointing start when they host the New York Giants on Monday, September 21.
