Carlos Correa’s Potential Position Change as Astros Push for Playoffs

Carlos Correa, once regarded as the finest defensive player on the field, might face another position change as he recovers from an ankle injury. The Houston Astros are striving for an American League playoff berth, and Correa’s potential return, scheduled within a couple of weeks, could see him at a new infield position this season.

Reports from MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart indicate that Correa, currently rehabilitating in Florida, has been practicing at second base. Throughout his 12-year MLB career, which includes winning a Platinum Glove as a shortstop in 2021 before his move to third base last season, Correa has yet to play at second base.

The decision to maintain Isaac Paredes at third base and relocate Jose Altuve from second base makes sense. Paredes has been Houston’s standout position player this season, with a 3.9 WAR and 21 home runs leading into Monday. Altuve, on the other hand, is now one of the weaker defensive second basemen at 36 years old. Correa’s defensive skills surpass those of both Paredes and Altuve at their respective positions, ensuring the Astros benefit from his glove at either spot.

One potential concern for the Astros is that shifting Altuve to designated hitter would require Yordan Alvarez to play left field. Alvarez, a powerful hitter, might experience increased physical strain in that position.

However, the Astros must first secure a playoff spot before planning their postseason lineup. They might need to clinch the AL West title to qualify for the playoffs, as they are currently competing with the Texas Rangers for position. The time for experimentation is limited. The Astros need a successful strategy involving Correa immediately; otherwise, Correa’s October could involve watching the playoffs from home.
