Clear skies and temperatures in the 80s set the stage for the 13th annual Rock the Block event in downtown Lake Zurich on September 12. The free event ran from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring live performances by three bands, including The Ron Burgundy’s, Libido Funk Circus, and 7th Heaven.
Main Street was bustling with food trucks and vendor booths. A large bar with high tables and a big screen television sold adult beverages, staffed by numerous volunteers. “It’s a perfect night,” said Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton, estimating the event drew in 8,000 attendees.
Poynton, who initiated Rock the Block in 2013 to foster community spirit, said, “The main reason was to bring people down here to our Main Street area. We spent a lot of money on the streetscape.” He noted improvements in the downtown area have made the event more attractive and safe.
Volunteers were essential to the event’s success, with nearly 100 contributing their time. Poynton emphasized, “We wouldn’t get this on without the volunteers.”
Attendees enjoyed many amenities. Julie Austin of McHenry, an alumna of Lake Zurich High School, returned for each annual event, expressing, “I love it. My family’s still here.”
Families savored the community atmosphere. Matt Mazur from Prospect Heights remarked on the event’s family-friendly nature, while Mariola Mazur appreciated the community unity. Dreux and Emily Dillingham, along with other families, shared meals and enjoyed the entertainment together.
Arbin Shrestha expressed gratitude to the volunteers, acknowledging the effort involved. “We appreciate them,” he said.
