Graffiti Sparks Controversy Amid ICE Shooting Investigation in Austin

Recently, a masked individual was recorded defacing a bridge in Austin, Texas, with inflammatory graffiti, including the phrase ‘Kill Donald Trump.’ This occurred in proximity to a protest site where a Venezuelan man, Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent while delivering food for DoorDash.

The incident took place near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard, an area marked by unrest following the shooting of Garces Perez. A photograph taken Monday shows a column adorned with various spray-painted messages, such as ‘F*** ICE,’ ‘F*** Donald Trump,’ ‘Kill all pedos,’ ‘Kill Donald Trump,’ and ‘It doesn’t stop with Epstein.’ Additionally, the graffiti includes ‘Talarico’ with a heart, signifying ‘love wins.’

Attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, representing Garces Perez, stated that his blue Toyota Corolla was ‘sideswiped’ twice by unmarked ICE vehicles. He suffered a gunshot wound, was hospitalized, and post-release was held in ICE custody with the bullet remaining in his body, now experiencing left-side paralysis.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) labeled Garces Perez as an ‘illegal alien’ and noted he had a ‘final order of removal.’ The department indicated the shooting occurred during a law enforcement operation. Contrarily, Lincoln-Goldfinch clarified that Garces Perez entered the U.S. legally under a parole program, possessing a valid work permit, and the deportation issue arose from address changes.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis announced an ongoing thorough investigation into the shooting. Authorities are accumulating physical evidence, assessing video footage, interviewing witnesses, and liaising with federal, state, and local entities to ascertain the events leading to the incident. Davis urged individuals with relevant information to aid the investigation, affirming that evidence, not speculation, will guide it. Continuous updates will be provided as legally permissible.

The graffiti incited disapproval among right-wing voices on social media. Andrew Kolvet, Turning Point USA spokesperson, remarked online that the mainstream media portrays the graffiti perpetrators as loving and tolerant. Conservative influencer Nick Sortor demanded stringent action, suggesting federal agents should intervene immediately without leniency.

Conversely, the incident prompted Democratic legislators to advocate for further scrutiny. State Representative James Talarico, aspiring for a U.S. Senate seat, called for an autonomous probe into the shooting, demanding full disclosure of video evidence. He highlighted the contrast between Garces Perez’s legal entry and nonexistent criminal history against the actions of ICE.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed deep anger and disappointment regarding the shooting. He emphasized the necessity for Austin police involvement in the investigation, intending to ensure impartial oversight.
