Matthew Stafford’s Historic Achievement in NFL

Matthew Stafford has strengthened his NFL legacy by claiming his first MVP award in the 2025 season. On Sunday night, he set an unprecedented record during the Los Angeles Rams game against the Denver Broncos on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 3.

According to ESPN Insights, Stafford is the first athlete to throw for 20,000 yards with multiple NFL teams. He achieved 45,109 passing yards with the Detroit Lions and now 20,000 yards with the Rams.

However, Stafford also made unfortunate history by throwing his 33rd career pick-six in the fourth quarter of the same game. This surpasses Brett Favre’s record of 32, setting a new benchmark for the most pick-sixes by any quarterback in the league.

Prior to the season, Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed his belief that Stafford is improving with age. Stafford acknowledged that his play style is different due to his lack of mobility compared to quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. He relies on having talented receivers and a supportive team environment.

“But I felt like for me to play really well, everybody around me has to play really well,” Stafford stated. “I’m not Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, some of these guys that can go out there and make these unbelievable creative plays with their legs.”

He further mentioned the importance of confidence and trust in his teammates and himself, stating that these elements are crucial for a quarterback’s performance.

Stafford continues his pursuit of a second Super Bowl victory with the Rams this season. Even if he does not surpass his Lions passing totals, further accolades seem possible.
