Tyquan Thornton’s Severe Ankle Injury During Chiefs vs. Raiders Game

2 hours ago 0

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a severe ankle injury during Sunday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Initially, he didn’t realize how serious it was.

During the game, Kansas City was down 19-17 with 3:25 left on the clock. On a third-and-4 play, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a deep pass down the left sideline. Thornton made an impressive 55-yard catch, but Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind, impacting his left ankle.

Despite maintaining possession of the football, Thornton realized the severity of the situation when he attempted to stand. His left foot was positioned unnaturally.

Oh, no, stated commentator J.J. Watt upon seeing the replay. Jim Nantz added, Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to look at it.

Medical staff immediately placed Thornton’s leg in an air cast and took him off the field. While the Chiefs confirmed an ankle injury, details about its extent were pending at the time.

The injury was untimely for Thornton, who had recently become a key player for Kansas City. Originally drafted by the Patriots in 2022, Thornton joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2024, made the active roster in 2025, and re-signed this year.

Before this game, Thornton had accumulated 108 receiving yards across the past two games. During this game, he achieved his first 100-yard performance in the NFL, catching five passes for 111 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

Kansas City was also missing Rashee Rice, who left the game in the first quarter due to a right hamstring injury. Rice had recorded 190 receiving yards in the previous three games, meaning the Chiefs’ passing offense faced significant challenges.

Thornton’s 55-yard reception led to Kenneth Walker’s decisive touchdown, helping Kansas City secure a 30-27 win and maintain a 4-0 record.

While the injury seemed severe, the hope remains for a less critical outcome.
