The Pentagon has awarded Raytheon a contract valued at $6.3 billion to manufacture the Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 Blk IB) interceptors. This marks a significant investment in defense capabilities.

According to Michael P. Duffey, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, these interceptors are critical for maintaining a battlefield edge. He stated, “Our warfighters must never face a fair fight, and the SM-3 Blk IB has proven its operational superiority to dominate any adversary across the globe.”

The contract aims to ensure production stability and address manufacturing challenges, guaranteeing availability of these interceptors for various combat environments including air, sea, or land.

SM-3 interceptors are crucial for disabling short and medium-range ballistic missiles. The U.S. Navy’s destroyers utilize these interceptors, such as in conflicts involving Iranian ballistic missiles. The SM-3 B variant, first launched in 2014, features an advanced infrared seeker and updated propulsion systems for accurate targeting.

The Pentagon’s contract spans five years and includes two optional extension years. This effort intends to improve supply-chain efficiency, directing resources towards assembly lines and vital suppliers.
