A 44-year-old woman from El Salvador was saved by the Hellenic Coast Guard after spending 20 hours in the Ionian Sea. She fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas near the island of Zakynthos.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the cargo ship MSC Rossella III was involved in the search efforts. The ship spotted her in a bright orange lifebuoy in the dark waters and notified authorities. A Greek Coast Guard team arrived on the scene to pull her to safety using ropes.
“She wanted to disembark,” the woman reportedly told authorities after jumping from the ship.
Following the rescue, she was taken to the port of Katakolo and then to a local hospital. A prosecutor called for a psychiatric evaluation of her condition, noted the Hellenic Coast Guard.
Authorities deployed a Coast Guard vessel and military helicopter to aid in the search operation. This event follows another incident last year where a man jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to escape gambling debt.
The woman went overboard while the cruise ship was traveling from Greece toward Italy, according to reports.
