PROVO, Utah — The decision for quarterback Bear Bachmeier to join Brigham Young University (BYU) from Stanford has paid off remarkably for both him and the team, currently ranked No. 8. This season, Bachmeier has demonstrated exceptional skills, playing a crucial role in BYU’s victories, including a standout performance against Iowa State with 329 passing yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 109 yards. His efforts contributed to the Cougars’ 24-10 victory and enhanced his reputation as a powerful dual-threat quarterback.
Bachmeier’s record-breaking performance placed him among distinguished Big 12 quarterbacks as he finished a game having achieved over 325 passing yards and 100 rushing yards without being sacked. This accomplishment makes Bachmeier only the fourth quarterback in the conference’s history to manage such a feat. Thus far, he has accumulated over 1,033 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and has maintained a low interception count this season.
BYU’s head coach, Kalani Sitake, praised Bachmeier’s rapid growth and maturity. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick, who has groomed prior successful BYU quarterbacks like Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall, has tailored the team’s offensive strategies to maximize Bachmeier’s skills. Bachmeier expressed appreciation for Roderick’s confidence in him, enabling him to perform with freedom and excellence. According to Roderick, Bachmeier grasped and executed the playbook with proficiency akin to a veteran player even as a freshman, which allowed the team to explore advanced on-field strategies previously reserved for experienced starters.
BYU’s reputation for nurturing talented quarterbacks harks back to the tenure of coach LaVell Edwards. Under Edwards, the school produced notable quarterbacks like Jim McMahon and Steve Young, both of whom are in the College Football Hall of Fame, and achieved significant success in the 1980s and 1990s, including a national championship in 1984. This legacy strengthens recruitment efforts for elite quarterbacks, as noted by Roderick.
Bachmeier’s prowess has captured the attention of upcoming opponents like Notre Dame, who will face him for the first time. Having insights from previous matchups, players like Notre Dame’s cornerback DJ McKinney recognize Bachmeier’s physical and strategic approach, noting his dual-threat capabilities as both a passer and runner.
