Pope Leo XIV reappeared at the Vatican on Sunday, greeting thousands in St. Peter’s Square just days after a lung cancer surgery. The 71-year-old delivered the Angelus prayer from the Apostolic Palace, marking his first public engagement post-discharge from Rome’s Gemelli hospital. During his stay, doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung.
Leo expressed appreciation for the support and prayers received during his hospitalization. He highlighted how these experiences brought him closer to those also suffering from illness. His gratitude extended to the medical team that provided care after the operation.
Pope Leo, the first American-born pontiff, shared intentions to gradually resume activities with the help of divine support and the faithful’s prayers. His Angelus address included reflections on Jesus’ teachings, urging Christians to live sincerely and avoid hypocrisy.
The pope’s swift return was unexpected, as doctors initially projected a hospital stay of about a week. On departing the hospital, Leo stated he felt “much better.”
Claire Holland, a visitor from Jacksonville, Fla., expressed feeling “very blessed” witnessing Leo’s return. “I think there have been millions of prayers. He is strong and determined, and it’s heartening to see him well enough to appear,” she said.
This operation was the first significant health challenge of Leo’s 17-month leadership. The tumor, identified as adenocarcinoma, is a common lung cancer form. Further tests will determine if treatments like chemotherapy or immunotherapy are needed.
The pope plans to visit Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from Nov. 6 to Nov. 17, a trip involving multiple flights and high-altitude stops. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, noted that Leo’s recovery seems robust enough to manage the travel. “No medical reasons should hinder the trip,” Margaritora commented.
The pope’s quick recovery has alleviated concerns about his demanding journey, demonstrating his determination and resilience during this health ordeal.
