Former President Barack Obama has accused the Trump administration of misusing federal powers against its political adversaries. In a social media statement, Obama defended Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who is under investigation regarding her citizenship.
Obama claimed that the administration is attempting to revoke Omar’s U.S. citizenship and deport her due to her criticisms of President Donald Trump. He cautioned that this move could establish a risky precedent. “A fundamental principle of American democracy is that the government cannot selectively target individuals based on their political beliefs or speech,” Obama posted on X. “But the Trump Administration is doing precisely this to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”
The remarks from Obama followed federal agents searching Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C. This search occurred as part of a criminal investigation into her immigration status. Sources have informed Fox News Digital that the investigation is exploring whether Omar or her father engaged in fraudulent actions on immigration documents during her naturalization process years ago.
Obama defended Omar by stating that she came to the U.S. with her father at the age of 12 and became a citizen at 17 when her father was naturalized. The former president criticized investigators for pursuing an “unsubstantiated theory” that Omar was actually 18 at the time, which would have necessitated her filing for citizenship independently.
Obama expressed concerns over the federal government’s extensive use of its powers against a compliant elected official, especially due to her vocal opposition towards the president. He has reached out to the White House and Department of Homeland Security for comments on his claims.
President Trump, denying any involvement in the investigation, explained that the matter is the Department of Justice’s responsibility. He stated, “I’ve always found her personally crooked, but that has no connection to me.”
Obama also addressed the administration’s repeated efforts to pursue perceived political adversaries, citing actions against New York’s attorney general, a past FBI director, and Federal Reserve members. “The willingness of any president or administration to engage in blatant intimidation tactics should alarm all Americans, regardless of their opinion on Congresswoman Omar’s politics,” he warned.
Obama urged that if such conduct becomes standard practice, it might not end with Omar, and future administrations, regardless of party affiliation, might adopt similar tactics.
