An 81-year-old man, Bobby McGill, was fatally shot with his own firearm during a home invasion in Mississippi. The suspect, Eric Basco, allegedly broke into McGill’s residence in the early hours while he and his wife were asleep, according to Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
Bobby McGill engaged in a struggle with Basco, which resulted in Basco seizing the homeowner’s gun and fatally shooting him multiple times. McGill’s wife, Peggy, managed to escape and contacted 911 to report the incident.
It appears there was a struggle, and the assailant got control of the pistol and shot Mr. Bobby multiple times.– Sheriff Jimmy Edwards
Basco’s motive seemed to be burglary. After the incident, he reportedly went into a bathroom and shot himself. He later died at the hospital.
Authorities found video footage from the night before the shooting, showing Basco walking near McGill’s home, yelling what sounded like, “God is dead.” Edwards speculated whether religious symbols on McGill’s property influenced Basco’s actions.
There were no significant criminal records against Basco except minor traffic violations, leading authorities to suspect mental health issues played a role in the event.
In a Facebook tribute, McGill’s granddaughter described him as a devoted Christian who cherished his family and faith. She expressed her family’s hope in reuniting with him in eternity.
Bobby McGill was remembered as a man who exemplified living by faith and love for his family.
