A Canadian tourist was found guilty of animal cruelty after an unusual incident at a Las Vegas hotel. The accused, Mitchell Fairbarn from Ontario, was convicted of felony and misdemeanor charges after a jury deliberated for five hours.
The bizarre event occurred on March 3 at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Fairbarn removed a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo named Peachy from its habitat and took the bird to his hotel room.
Surveillance footage showed Fairbarn holding the flamingo in an elevator and carrying it through a hotel hallway while the bird made distress noises.
Prosecutors presented evidence showing Fairbarn pulling Peachy by its feet. Feathers were found on the hotel floor, indicating the bird’s distress.
Hotel security reported the flamingo missing from the enclosure. When located, Peachy was missing several feathers, had blood on its feathers, and suffered wing injuries. The Las Vegas police charged Fairbarn with four felony counts for removing the flamingo from its habitat.
Tomsheck, Fairbarn’s defense attorney, admitted his client’s poor decision-making while intoxicated. He argued that Fairbarn did not intend to harm the animal.
Mitch was drunk and made bad decisions.Tomsheck stated.
Tiffany Moore from Lone Mountain Animal Hospital confirmed that Peachy is recovering physically but appears more anxious during examinations.
Fairbarn remains under house arrest, awaiting sentencing on December 1. He faces up to four years in prison for the felony and an additional six months for the misdemeanor.
During the trial, it was revealed that Fairbarn received death threats and was unable to return to Canada for his father’s funeral due to the ongoing case. Clark County prosecutor Haley Willming pointed out that these consequences stemmed from Fairbarn’s actions.
The Flamingo Las Vegas is well-known for its wildlife habitat, featuring flamingos, turtles, and koi fish among other animals.
