Indiana Democratic candidate Jaime West disclosed on Monday that she consumed three beers before participating in a televised candidate forum on October 9. The forum has attracted significant attention online, with comparisons made to a skit from Saturday Night Live.
During an interview with Connersville TV3, West declared her intention to “fire all Republicans” from county government if elected. “What do you want me to say? I don’t like being around them,” stated West, the Democratic candidate for Fayette County Council District 4. She expressed her frustration, saying, “Y’all did this to us. Y’all voted for this…this ICE coming into our communities, stealing people’s jobs.”
West clarified her stance later, distinguishing between “good Republicans” and “MAGA,” adding that the latter group “are racist and aren’t very intelligent at all.” She claimed to have faced threats from MAGA supporters. Her concluding message to voters was a direct camera address: “We have guns, too,” a statement that quickly went viral on social media.
Internet users and political analysts raised questions about West’s conduct, with speculations about possible intoxication during the interview. On Piers Morgan Uncensored, West responded to inquiries from host Morgan about potential drinking before the forum. Previously, West had informed the Connersville News-Examiner of consuming one beer. Morgan’s persistent questioning led to her admission of consuming three beers. West argued that this did not compromise her interview and asserted, “I do know what I’m talking about and that’s Indiana politics.”
Morgan challenged West on her “very inflammatory” comments about Republicans and asked if she regretted her remarks. “No. I say it all the time,” West replied. “I’m not friends with them. I don’t like them. They voted for all of this that’s happening to our country.” Her election rival is Republican Gary R. Keener Jr., contesting the Fayette County Council District 4 position in the upcoming November 3 general election.
Later, Morgan inquired whether West would continue drinking beer if she became a politician. Her retort was, “I don’t know, why don’t you ask Pete Hegseth, who is drinking whiskey as he’s running an illegal war? Why don’t you ask him that?”
