Democrat Allison Montgomery has made history by unseating GOP state lawmaker Phillip Rigsby to become Alabama’s first transgender lawmaker. Montgomery won in a district that previously supported Donald Trump in three consecutive elections.
“I know the headlines tomorrow are gonna be provocative and catchy, but let’s focus on the most important part of this victory: we showed that a truly grassroots campaign that stands on its policies and its principles has a real shot in Alabama,”
She will represent Alabama House District 25, covering areas in Madison and Limestone counties. Trump had won these counties by significant margins in previous elections.
Montgomery emphasized her commitment to her constituents:
“I’m going to work especially hard for those who hate me, because they deserve a better Alabama as much as anyone. We the people are tired of attempts to distract us with culture war issues…”
During the campaign, Rigsby attempted to cast doubt on Montgomery’s ability to govern, focusing on her transgender identity. He claimed that transitioning affects one’s approach to policy. Montgomery rebuffed these claims, accusing Rigsby of diverting attention away from substantial issues.
