Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” encouraged moderate Democrats to oppose the socialist wing of their party. This follows the recent historic success in the midterm elections. Speaking during his show, Maher criticized democratic socialists, urging moderates to regain control.
Maher discussed these issues with Coleman Hughes, a writer and podcast host, who noted the problems with socialist policies. Hughes cited high rents and crime, arguing that socialist approaches, such as rent control, ultimately lead to increased rents.
“We have a hundred years of data on socialism. It’s not good for the economy. It’s not a new idea,” said Hughes.
Maher agreed, suggesting that the policies promoted by socialist candidates align with communist ideologies. He asserted that some government programs like Medicare and Social Security might be seen as socialism but disagreed with more extreme proposals.
He believes moderate Democrats can use their midterm victories to challenge far-left policies. Maher argued that the election results indicate voters might reject socialist agendas.
Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff critiqued Maher’s understanding of socialism. Shroff noted that government services like Medicare and Social Security are social insurance programs, not socialism.
Shroff highlighted Maher’s past interactions with Donald Trump, suggesting Maher’s views on socialism may shift depending on who is implementing policies.
