Illinois Defeats Nebraska to Secure Bowl Eligibility

1 hour ago 0

Collin Dixon played a pivotal role in Illinois’ victory over Nebraska, making two touchdown catches, including a record-breaking one. Illinois secured a 24-13 win, ensuring bowl eligibility with their fourth consecutive victory.

Dixon’s two receptions for touchdowns, measuring 3 and 6 yards, brought his seasonal total to 12, breaking Illinois’ previous single-season record by two touchdowns. Dixon caught eight passes totaling 129 yards, delivered by Katin Houser, who completed 22 of his 36 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns.

A clever trick play in the form of a fake field goal provided the go-ahead touchdown for Illinois early in the third quarter. Lars Rau’s 29-yard run set the stage for Houser’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Anderson.

Holder Lars Rau took off on a run during a fake field-goal attempt against Nebraska in the second half.

The play, named “Charlie Brown,” impressed Rau because of its execution by the entire team. Despite Nebraska’s coaching staff stating they anticipated such a move, Illinois performed effectively.

Illinois’ coach Bret Bielema expressed satisfaction with achieving bowl eligibility but aimed for a playoff berth. “A 9-3 team can get into the playoffs,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their momentum.

Nebraska’s defense saw their fourth consecutive defeat, with Anthony Colandrea completing 32 of 43 passes for 284 yards and a touchdown. Jacory Brown Jr. contributed with six receptions for 93 yards, while Jamal Rule added 69 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Despite signs of improvement and a long-standing record, Nebraska made changes to their coaching staff. Five days after praising Dana Holgorsen, Coach Matt Ruhle removed the offensive coordinator. Glenn Thomas, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, assumed play-calling responsibilities.

Nebraska’s offensive stats rank 12th in the Big Ten and 96th nationally, scoring 22.2 points per game. This need for change stemmed from a sequence of narrow losses, each leading in the fourth quarter.

Illinois wide receiver Collin Dixon breaks a tackle from Nebraska’s Andrew Marshall to score a touchdown.

Dixon’s record-setting moment came late in the first half, with the 3-yard touchdown pass tying the game 7-7. Nebraska initially led with Mekhi Nelson’s 15-yard run on a 98-yard drive.

Nebraska kicker John Hohl missed field goal attempts from 54 and 45 yards out, tightening the margin but failing to capitalize.

The loss exacerbated Nebraska’s challenging situation. Starting the season 5-0 was a first since 2016, followed by consecutive narrow losses. The continuous defeats highlight fan dissatisfaction and a diminishing performance in Lincoln.

Illinois, after early home defeats to Duke and Purdue, found rejuvenation with four straight wins. Their upcoming challenging games include a matchup at No. 5 UCLA, at home against No. 21 Iowa, and an away game against Northwestern.

Despite being held under 100 rushing yards by Nebraska for the sixth time this season, Illinois’ 84 yards were enough, especially with the record-setting performance from Dixon, coming shortly after Javari Barnett’s injury exit.

Next, Illinois will challenge No. 5 UCLA, while Nebraska faces Rutgers in their continuing season efforts.
