Nebraska’s Matt Rhule Changes Offensive Direction

2 hours ago 0

Nebraska’s head coach, Matt Rhule, plans to shift the Cornhuskers’ offensive strategy. The decision to remove Dana Holgorsen as offensive coordinator followed after a 24-13 loss to Illinois. This action comes despite Rhule previously praising Holgorsen as a prominent offensive mind.

Glenn Thomas, the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, will take on play-calling responsibilities. The Cornhuskers have managed to score only 54 points during a four-game losing streak. Rhule expressed his frustration with the team’s performance, stating his duty to enact necessary changes.

“I am angry, disappointed, and frustrated with our results this season,” Rhule shared in his statement. “As head coach, I am responsible for all aspects of our program, including wins and losses, and must make changes when needed.”

Rhule still respects Holgorsen’s coaching skills and leadership, but emphasized the need for a new approach to the offensive game plan. Holgorsen’s tendency to rely on passing and downplay the running game has faced criticism, particularly during the 17-10 loss to Washington.

The Huskers, beset by penalties and missed opportunities, scored on only two of nine possessions against Illinois. In four games, they have converted just nine of 46 possessions into scores.

Rhule remains committed to evaluating the program and adjusting as necessary. He expressed appreciation for the high expectations and support from Nebraska fans and hopes for continued backing as important games loom ahead.

Holgorsen was in his second full season as the offensive coordinator. He had joined Nebraska from TCU in November 2024. Nebraska next faces Rutgers in New Jersey.
