Sam Holcomb, Brother Rice’s promising freshman quarterback, thrives under pressure. However, during Saturday’s matchup, he focused on game management rather than showcasing his passing skills. The Crusaders strategically leaned on their effective running game, a decision Holcomb supported wholeheartedly.

“We didn’t really have to pass much,” Holcomb explained. “I don’t prioritize stats. I’m here for the victory. Our running game led us to win.” Despite a conservative passing approach, Holcomb demonstrated efficiency, completing 9 of 12 throws for 156 yards and securing two touchdowns. He also contributed 53 yards on the ground.

The Crusaders triumphed with a decisive 49-6 win over Batavia in the Class 7A second-round match held in Chicago. This victory positioned Brother Rice (9-2) to face an unbeaten Normal Community (11-0) in the quarterfinals. Decatur Washington led the Crusaders’ ground attack, rushing for 116 yards and scoring twice. Jameson Davis, an Army recruit, bolstered the team with 98 yards and two TDs.

Coach Casey Quedenfeld emphasized adaptability in game planning. “Our strategy depends on the opponents. Saturday, we didn’t need to throw as much,” he said. “If next week’s situation demands it, we’re prepared to utilize Sam’s passing abilities.”

Meanwhile, Batavia’s Wyoming recruit, Michael Vander Luitgaren, showed his skills with 116 passing yards and added an 11-yard rushing touchdown. However, Brother Rice’s rushing dominance was the highlight, totaling 318 yards and five touchdowns across 39 carries, decisively sealing the win.

Holcomb expressed his gratitude for the strong running back lineup, acknowledging the contributions of players like “Jamo” (Jameson Davis), Decatur Washington, and the sophomore talent Aydan Yarbrough. “We’re lucky to have them,” he stated.

The challenging playoff season highlights the need for a robust running game. “No coach underestimates the importance of winning in the trenches, especially in cold weather,” said Quedenfeld. Washington’s return and Yarbrough’s steady performance bolster the team. Davis, regarded as their lead rusher, brings balance and leadership, gaining skills that led him to West Point.

With two playoff games in his varsity record, Holcomb recognizes his integral role on the team. He remains committed to striving for victories. “I’ll give everything for my team,” he vowed. “Choosing Brother Rice is the best decision I’ve made. We’re eager to practice and continue our momentum.”
