Alaska Senate Race: Ongoing Close Contest Between Sullivan and Peltola

1 hour ago 0

The Alaska Senate race remains undecided. Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola are separated by fewer than 700 votes. A similarly named candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, has influenced the close race.

Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy commented on Alaska’s complex voting system. He indicated that the close contest might remain unresolved for weeks. Dunleavy stated on WABC Radio that substantial vote updates are expected on Friday, Nov. 13, and Wednesday, Nov. 18. He acknowledged Alaska’s voting process as slow and challenging.

Peltola currently leads with 48.17% of the votes, holding an advantage of 637 votes. Alaska uses a ranked-choice voting system, causing delays in result updates. Election Day was Tuesday, Nov. 3. If no candidate claims 50% of the votes by Nov. 25, ranking preferences will determine the outcome. Dunleavy emphasized the confusion surrounding the recent voting methodology, which was up for possible repeal.

The proposal to eliminate ranked-choice voting remains narrowly undecided with ‘no’ votes leading at 51.85%. Further vote counts are ongoing. Investigations focus on potential misconduct, involving false intentions related to candidate listing on ballots.

Dunleavy criticized the “Decoy Dan” scheme, an alleged attempt to mislead voters using a candidate with a similar name to Republican Sullivan. This tactic aimed to divert votes from the incumbent. Allegedly, Dan J. Sullivan attempted to use the incumbent’s middle initial on the ballot. Initially blocked by the division of elections, a court ruling later mandated his inclusion on the ballot.

An article by The New York Times linked this strategy to Peltola’s campaign. Following its release, Dunleavy reopened the investigation into potential misconduct. The Department of Justice also initiated its own probe. This investigation coincides with the election, highlighting the ongoing complexity of the situation.
