Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, has been released from the hospital following a weeklong stay. As announced in a statement by his spokesperson, McConnell is now recuperating at home and will continue his work remotely. David Popp, a spokesperson for the senator, shared, “Senator McConnell was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is grateful for the outstanding care he received. He is feeling better and will be working from home this week on the advice of his doctors.”
McConnell, who previously held the position of Republican leader in the Senate until the end of last year, was admitted to the hospital on February 2 after experiencing symptoms similar to the flu. McConnell is 83 years old and announced last year that he would not be running for re-election, which has sparked a competitive primary race to find his replacement.
In recent times, there have been increasing concerns regarding McConnell’s health due to several incidents where he appeared to freeze during public appearances. Notably, he suffered a concussion from a fall in 2023 and fractured his shoulder in 2019. Furthermore, incidents of him falling multiple times within the Capitol complex last year led to him being seen in a wheelchair assisted by his staff.
Serving as Senator since 1984, McConnell held the role of Republican leader in the Senate from 2007 to 2025. Despite supporting Donald Trump during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, there has been consistent tension between the two. Last year, McConnell voted against two of President Trump’s nominees for key cabinet positions—Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence and Pete Hegseth as defense secretary. Additionally, McConnell has openly opposed Trump’s tariff policies.
