Colorado Democratic Party Rebukes Governor Over Clemency Decision

1 month ago 0

The Colorado State Democratic Party issued a rebuke to Governor Jared Polis regarding his decision to release Tina Peters from incarceration. This move expressed the frustration of Democratic voters who viewed the decision as out of alignment with the party’s principles.

Governor Jared Polis, a member of the Democratic Party, faced censure on Wednesday after he commuted the nine-year prison sentence of Tina Peters. Peters, a prominent election denier and supporter of former President Trump, was serving time for tampering with voting machines.

A grassroots effort led by over 700 Democrats pushed for the censure of Governor Polis. The party’s central committee meeting voted on the measure, with an overwhelming 89.8 percent supporting the censure.

“The man is wildly out of touch with the party he effectively leads.”

Tina Peters was one of the most notable election deniers incarcerated. Her actions were related to an unsuccessful attempt to prove voter fraud in the 2020 election. Despite her age of 70 and being a first-time felon, many Democratic and Republican leaders urged Governor Polis to deny her clemency. They argued that Peters posed a risk to electoral integrity and democracy, showing no remorse for her actions.

Governor Polis defended his decision, stating he believed Peters received a disproportionately severe sentence due to her association with election conspiracy theories. Eric Maruyama, Polis’ spokesperson, commented that “sometimes the right thing isn’t the popular thing with everybody.”
