Detroit Lions Release Terrion Arnold Amid Felony Charges

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the franchise’s decision to release Terrion Arnold, calling it “unfortunate”. Arnold, formerly a cornerback for the team, faces felony charges. “You never want to let go of a player, especially someone you’ve been around for a while and drafted,” Campbell said. “It’s unfortunate, but we made the move we thought was best for us.”

The Lions released Arnold last month after a Florida judge set his bail at $1 million on eight felony charges. These charges are based on allegations that he orchestrated the abduction and assault of three men. Prosecutors in Florida allege that Arnold mistakenly believed the men had stolen $100,000 in cash and luxury items from him.

In March, Campbell mentioned the team believed Arnold was not involved in the crime based on the information available at that time. “I feel like we’re going to be good here,” Campbell expressed at the NFL’s annual league meeting. “I’m going to trust what the kid said.”

Harvey Steinberg, Arnold’s attorney, argued that prosecutors have not demonstrated that Arnold knew or directed the actions of his associates.

Lions cornerback D.J. Reed expressed his support for Arnold. “He’s a great human being, one of the better men, better teammates that I’ve met in the league,” Reed said. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but he’s a great dude. A great human being. His energy is always positive. I reached out to him. He’s doing good.”

Arnold was drafted by Detroit with the No. 24 pick in 2024. During the draft held in Motor City, the former Alabama star appeared with a big smile and a light salmon silk suit. With two years remaining on his four-year rookie contract, Arnold had an uneven rookie season, making 15 starts without an interception. Last season, he intercepted one pass while being limited to eight games due to a concussion and shoulder injury.

Prior to Arnold’s release, the judge had not required him to wear an ankle monitor as it would have prevented him from playing in games and training. The Lions, following a season that fell short of expectations, seemed to be preparing to play without Arnold as he was not present with the No. 1 defense during offseason workouts.

Campbell expressed confidence in the team’s cornerback lineup. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin are expected starters, while Roger McCreary will compete for playing time. The team also hopes Ennis Rakestraw can contribute after missing last season due to shoulder surgery and being limited to eight games as a rookie because of hamstring and ankle injuries.”We feel pretty good in that room with the competition between veterans and young guys,” Campbell commented.
