A woman from Pennsylvania unearthed a remarkable diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, shortly after experiencing personal tragedies. Keshia Smith, grieving the loss of her son in October and her father recently, discovered a 3.09-carat diamond during her visit last month. Park officials described the gem as colorless and smooth, akin to a bead, with distinctive inclusions around its edges.
Smith’s trip to the park was planned more than a year in advance, but it became a way to seek comfort amidst her emotional turmoil. Accompanied by her boyfriend Joey and brother Kirim, Smith began her diamond hunt on April 21, exploring the park and interacting with others. While digging, she noticed a change in soil color and soon spotted a shiny object in her shovel. Initially skeptical, she placed the sequin-like stone in her bag and continued exploring before heading to the park’s wash pavilion for closer inspection.
Her perseverance led to a moment of joy as the crystal’s significance unfolded, prompting one visitor to encourage her to have it examined. Overwhelmed with emotion, Smith expressed her disbelief in her fortune, likening the diamond’s shape to a heart, the first impression she had upon discovery. “I really prayed for this,” Smith said, reflecting on a period filled with pressure and loss.
According to Caleb Howell, superintendent of Crater of Diamonds State Park, the diamond adds to the park’s rare collection, with only 15 diamonds over 3 carats found in the past decade. Howell noted that park officials do not appraise the gems, as they are uncut, natural stones. “Our diamonds are unique,” said Howell, emphasizing their rarity and individual characteristics.
Howell encourages visitors to embrace the adventure and cherish the memories formed while searching for these rare gemstones. Though not everyone finds a diamond, the experience of searching can be rewarding, and there remains a possibility of leaving with a precious find.
