Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar denied involvement in a widespread fraud scheme on Wednesday. This followed claims by the Vice President that the Department of Justice (DOJ) was investigating her. Omar’s denial also addressed accusations from the alleged mastermind of a $250 million meals scam, adding to allegations from the Trump administration of various frauds, including immigration-related.
Omar’s Rebuttal
In her statement to Newsweek, Omar said, ‘Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false.’ She emphasized her prompt response to the fraud’s revelation, having demanded accountability from the USDA Secretary. Omar condemned the misuse of funds meant for feeding children, saying, ‘Stealing millions of dollars to bankroll lavish lifestyles is reprehensible.’
Newsweek contacted the DOJ for comments regarding the allegations on Wednesday afternoon.
Background on Accusations
Aimee Bock, founder of the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, faced conviction for conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud in March 2025. From jail, she claimed Omar was involved in the scam, citing fraudulent claims filed by restaurant owners during the pandemic that misappropriated nutrition funds.
Bock expressed skepticism about Omar’s lack of awareness, stating, ‘I struggle to believe that she wouldn’t have known.’ In contrast, she maintained her innocence in the scheme and claimed to have alerted officials.
MEALS Act Connections
The fraud allegations intersect with Omar’s MEALS Act, introduced in March 2020. The act allowed the USDA to issue waivers for school meal requirements, facilitating payments. Bock accused Omar of intervening to extend the fraud’s duration when waivers expired, which Omar denied.
‘The MEALS Act was signed into law by President Trump with bipartisan support,’ Omar clarified, attributing the regulatory framework to Trump’s USDA Secretary.
Omar expressed gratitude for the accountability shown toward Bock and others defrauding taxpayers and betraying children.
State-Level Accusations and Reactions
Minnesota state representatives recently released a report blaming Governor Tim Walz’s administration for enabling large-scale fraud. The report also criticized Omar related to the MEALS Act’s implications.
A federal investigation initiated in 2022 resulted in at least 57 convictions, underlining the continuing scrutiny.
Republican Criticism
Omar’s involvement in this and other accusations drew criticism from Republicans, notably President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Omar refuted claims of immigration fraud, such as marrying her brother to stay in the U.S. No evidence has confirmed these allegations.
Trump previously suggested Omar’s denaturalization and deportation, with Congress considering measures against members born outside the U.S. Vance, from a press conference, echoed immigration fraud accusations against Omar.
‘We’re going to investigate it,’ Vance stated, hinting the DOJ’s interest in pursuing any potential crimes identified.
Future Proceedings
The DOJ has yet to confirm an official investigation. Bock is awaiting sentencing, where prosecutors aim for a 100-year sentence.
Bock commented to Newsweek from jail, ‘I am putting this in God’s hands,’ expressing contemplation and prayer regarding her situation.
