The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded on Saturday, crowning ‘Fjord’ with the prestigious Palme d’Or. Directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, the multilingual drama examines the clash between religious conservatism and social liberalism.
‘Fjord,’ starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, tells the story of a Christian couple accused of child abuse. Once child protection authorities step in, the family’s dilemma turns into a national debate, illustrating societal divisions.
Mungiu remarked on stage the importance of cinema in discussing relevant topics. He highlighted how modern society is increasingly polarized.
This achievement marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or, having previously won in 2007 for ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.’
This year’s festival felt less vibrant, partly due to the absence of major American studios and recognizable stars. The lineup lacked a clear critical favorite in the main competition for the Palme d’Or.
Despite a variety of notable films, the festival rarely heard expressions of excitement and love.
The festival saw multiple winners for key awards including best director, actress, and actor. Jury head Park Chan-wook praised the panel’s diversity, which included Demi Moore and Chloé Zhao.
Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski, along with Spanish directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, shared the best director award. Their film ‘La Bola Negra’ intertwines stories from different epochs, centered around an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca.
