Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, has come under scrutiny due to inflammatory comments he made about the U.S. Army and individuals serving in it. In now-deleted posts on his Reddit account, Platner described the Army as “absolute trash” and criticized its members as “fat, lazy trash.” These comments, part of a broader critique, have surfaced as a significant campaign issue as he vies to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Platner’s military service includes time in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the Maryland Army National Guard, having completed multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although harshly critical of the Army, Platner acknowledged some capable units and positive aspects of the institution. He emphasized the importance of internal criticism among service members, stating, “Civilians can be as dumb as they want, but WE have a duty to be brutally honest.”
The controversy extends beyond his general remarks on the Army to specific comments about wounded Army veteran Teddy Daniels, whom Platner criticized in a now-deleted post for battlefield tactics. Daniels, a Purple Heart recipient, was shot by the Taliban, and Platner’s post claimed that he “didn’t deserve to live.” These statements have drawn significant backlash, with prominent veterans expressing outrage. Adam Schwarze, a former Navy SEAL and current Minnesota Senate candidate, remarked, “We don’t make jokes about our brothers and sisters dying.”
Platner has attributed his previous behavior to psychological trauma from his deployments and the “crude humor” culture of the Marines. However, his past remarks are not confined to Reddit. In a 2024 podcast, Platner controversially implied that Navy SEAL Chris Kyle may have inflated his kill numbers by shooting civilians, further criticizing the competence of the SEALs while praising Army Rangers.
The fallout from Platner’s remarks has led to political repercussions. The National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson, Bernadette Breslin, described his comments as “disgusting and disqualifying” and highlighted the awkward position in which this controversy places Platner’s Democratic allies. Despite the mounting criticism, the Platner campaign has not issued a response to recent inquiries.
