Kyiv Hit by Major Ballistic Missile Attack Amid Rising Tensions

1 month ago 0

On Sunday, Kyiv faced a massive ballistic missile strike, injuring at least five people, as authorities reported. This attack followed warnings from Moscow about retalitory action for strikes in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

Explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital, causing a residential building near the government district to shake. Many residents sought refuge in an underground metro station in the city center.

The capital has come under a mass ballistic missile attack, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, wrote on social media.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that five people were injured, with one requiring hospitalization. Reports indicated that the Shevchenkivsky, Dniprovsky, and Podilsky districts were affected. There were preliminary reports of fires and damage to residential buildings. Tkachenko warned that a strike drone attack was ongoing, maintaining the potential threat of further missile strikes.

Authorities in Ukraine, along with the U.S. Embassy, had earlier sounded alarms about a likely significant attack on the capital. This followed Russia’s vow to retaliate for a drone attack by Ukrainian forces in the Russian-occupied eastern region, which Moscow claimed resulted in civilian casualties.

The overnight drone attack by Ukraine targeted a Russian drone unit in Starobilsk, leading to significant casualties and trapping people under debris. Russia’s foreign ministry promised severe punishment for those responsible, citing 18 deaths from the incident.

Warnings about a combined Russian strike, possibly involving advanced weaponry like the Oreshnik missile, were issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the U.S. Embassy. The embassy communicated the threat of a major air attack on Ukrainian territory, including Kyiv, within a 24-hour window.

Ukrainian strikes on Russian-controlled areas, including attacks on dormitories and oil infrastructure, are often described as reprisals. Despite this, Russia maintains that its military actions do not target civilians.

Efforts led by the United States to mediate a resolution have slowed, with other international issues taking precedence.
