The McCain family is mourning the unexpected passing of Douglas Shepp McCain, the eldest adopted son of the late Senator John McCain. Doug McCain passed away at 66, as noted in an obituary from his funeral home. However, specific details about the cause of his sudden passing remain undisclosed.

Meghan McCain expressed her sadness on social media, highlighting Doug’s supportive presence in her life. She described him as a joyful individual who added humor and engaging conversation to any setting. She extended her thoughts to Doug’s wife, Ashley, and their children, Caroline and Shepp.

He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life.

The McCain Institute also released a statement offering condolences to the family. The institute recognized Doug as a Navy pilot and a friend to many associated with Senator McCain’s work.

Doug McCain was born on October 4, 1959, in Pensacola, Florida, and spent his formative years in Jacksonville. He was an athlete, involved in surfing, baseball, and soccer. Doug completed his schooling at Jacksonville Episcopal High School in 1977 and pursued higher education at the University of Virginia. There, he majored in systems engineering and became part of the Navy ROTC program. During his time at UVA, he met his future wife, Ashley Jardine.

Upon graduating in 1982, Doug embarked on a six-year career in the Navy, flying A-6 Intruders. He later transitioned to a role he cherished at American Airlines, where he advanced to the position of captain.

Doug McCain was the son of John McCain’s first marriage to Carol Shepp McCain. John McCain, known for his military service and political career as a U.S. Senator and the Republican presidential nominee in 2008, adopted Doug during this marriage. John McCain passed away in 2018.

The family praised Doug for his love of learning, even humorously noting his ‘World Book’ nickname, despite advancements like Google. He enjoyed golf, achieving three holes-in-one, and valued his friendships and family dearly. His legacy of generosity and dedication to those he loved remains a cherished memory.

Doug McCain leaves behind his wife of four decades, Ashley Jardine McCain, and their children and grandchild. His mother, Carol Shepp McCain; brother, Andy McCain; sister, Sidney McCain; stepmother, Cindy McCain; and stepsiblings, Meghan, Jack, Jimmy, and Bridget, also survive him.

Private services are planned for the family, with a memorial gathering set for May 30 at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
